Aeronautical Charting

The AIM Charting Section has the infrastructure, equipment and expertise to provide an aeronautical chart design service.

Abilities

A full spectrum of design capabilities exist, from conventional non-precision approach charts, precision approach charts, standard arrival and standard departure charts through to GNSS and RNP instrument procedure charts. Furthermore, all charts as defined in ICAO Annex 4 can be provided. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Aerodrome
  • Aerodrome Obstacle Type-A
  • Parking and Docking
  • En-Route charts

In addition to topographical data, WGS-84 survey data (airport and obstacle), AIP, AIP supplement and NOTAM data is incorporated into the design of aeronautical charts.

All the processes are quality controlled to ensure flight safety, and quality assured in accordance with ISO 9001 standards.

Achievements

The AIM Department has been designing aeronautical charts for South Africa and for South African clients since the inception of ATNS in 1994. Some of these clients include:

  • Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA)
  • Lanseria Airport Management
  • Richards Bay Municipality
  • South African Civil Aviation Authority

Furthermore, extensive chart design and production work has been done for clients external to South Africa on a contractual basis. Some of these clients include:

  • Angola
  • Cape Verde
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Namibia
  • Rwanda
  • Swaziland
  • United Nations
